Over 600,000 men died during the American Civil War. Few speak of the 1.5 million horses and mules that gave their lives. An ode to the American war horse.

Contemplate Brave
8x10

As someone with experience working with teenagers on a daily basis, and also one who avidly researches history, I cannot help but sometimes contemplate our progression of society and what it has done to our youth. Is it an injustice that our youth today act the way that they do? I cannot help but wonder if any young men or women that have been in my classroom and struggle with drugs, alcohol, or the law, might in another time have been another Lady Jane Grey, Alexander the Great, Baldwin the IV, Emperor Meiji, or even one of the many more adventurous teenage Civil War soldiers or Native American warriors. Every success and ounce of work is meant to lead to college or the work force, and those who are not college material are seen as failures. Something deep to contemplate as I worked on this portrait of a young Indian brave.

Drinkin' Buddies
16x20
I was at a reenactment in Louisiana, an actual battlefield that has been owned privately since the war and thus has no monuments, nor is it under the threat that the nearby battlefield at Mansfield is by strip-mining, but some complain that reenactments are allowed on the property. Makes me wonder at times. On a lighter note, I spoke to this young man for some length about his mule and when he stopped to take a drink of water, I could not help but be happy by the picture before me. I of course imply it might not be harmless water by the title, but it did so fit!

A flying artillery team could take the field quickly, and were used by both Confederate and Union armies. Confederates, by necessity, often made do with as few as four horses per cannon and limber, while the Union armies, better supplied, had access to six.
