The Mascot

Throughout history dogs have gone to war with their masters, and the Civil War is no exception. There are a number of stories of regiments that "gave the last full measure" with the men that believed fully in their cause. These Louisiana soldiers and their faithful friend is my homage to this.

This one is a portrait of my daughter on the steps by the Navasota River at the Confederate Reunion Grounds, Mexia, Texas. The old soldiers after the war would meet here annually for their reunions and remember victories won and comrades lost. Later, the river's waters were used in nearby oilfields, so evidence of both eras are present at the park.
The color in this piece inktense pencil, and I am very pleased with it.

During our trip to the 150th Anniversary of Gettysburg, and the accompanying reenactment, we toured the battlefield. This is one of the most impressive monuments on the field, and sits near where Pickett's Charge was launched on July 3, 1863. Atop the monument is General Lee and Traveller. The men around the base represent different occupations in civilian life that filled the ranks in gray.
This one was inspired by my brother-in-law, who was looking for small pencil pieces to collect from our trip. Amazingly, he was unable to find anything. This one turned out very will, I think.
