Horses and mules were of vital importance in both armies during the War Between The States. In addition to cavalry, field artillery could not be moved into position or retreat from the field without sizable teams. In the Federal armies the regulation was six mounts per artillery piece, and in the Confederacy it most often were four since horses were a valuable commodity and quite simply unavailable in the needed numbers.
